AFRICA SAFARI CHALLENGE After crossing to the Zambian side of the river we will find a small dirt airstrip. As the red African soil speeds past turning up a cloud of dust, you race down the runway. Awkwardly the small two seated microlight (with professional pilot at the controls) lifts from the ground and banks out over the river. Within seconds you are high above the palm fringed islands heading toward an enormous wall of spray...the Victoria Falls. The air cools as the "smoke that thunders" surrounds you. You shoot over the fall's lip and the gorge opens beneath you! Soon you are banking over the rainforest, then ascending high above the river, ready to shoot back over the Falls. Your heart beats wildly but the smile on your face betrays your fear. The pilot points out a pod of hippo upriver, and an elephant trumpeting along the Zambezi's bank as you swoop down low, banking and gliding over the upper river and the Zambezi National Park. Your flight will last a half hour. The small dirt airstrip grows rapidly as you descend. As the ground rushes up you flare, hovering inches above the ground before touching down. You walk shakily across the burnt African soil pondering the meaning of it all....
