Wildebeest Migration
Update! All is coming back to normal after heavy rains made many roads impassable (for all but the 4x4's). The worst places between Ngorongoro and Manyara have been fixed. Most parts of Lake Manyara National Park are now accessible and game viewing is good. The only place that has yet to clear is the hippo pool. The rest of the areas are beautiful with animals scattered almost everywhere. The Tarangire river has dropped and crossing is now possible at several sights and Ngorongoro's rhino's have been seen on every safari. In the Serengeti it is the wildebeest "Calving Season". The number of births is unbelievable - especially at dawn where they are dropping like loaded bags.....one would imagine that it is a competition. For the hyenas, it is a feast. They are there, waiting to catch the young as they fall. To be able to evade the merciless hyenas, they have to be able to run as fast as their mothers just after birth. But, all said and done, the carnivores of Serengeti will never bring down the numbers of the wildebeest - no matter how hard they try. The numbers are amazing, overwhelming. A strange incident occurred to one of the vehicles in the south eastern Serengeti. It was an experience that the clients will never forget! They encountered a cheetah whose playful cabs climbed on top of the vehicles bonnet, then on to the roof. As the game continued, the mother was a few meters away looking for possible prey. Suddenly, the two cheetah cubs fell inside the vehicle through the open roof. The clients ran out and sought refuge in the other vehicle which was only two meters away. The cubs ran out of the first vehicle as the doors were left open! Apart from just turning her head in the direction of the commotion, the mother did not move even inch. With the rains still in the Serengeti, the wildebeest will remain for a couple of months to come. There is still plenty to feed on. The other animals are also in very good health. For clients coming this period, you will have a lot to enjoy with so much beauty around! Back to The Wildebeest Migration Made Simple Links to other pages: ULTIMATE AFRICA
