Wildebeest Migration
Update! Early November found wildebeest herds near Kirawira Tented Camp and Grumeti River Camp in the western Serengeti. The ongoing east African drought had caused the wildebeest to return from Kenyas Masai Mara to the western Serengeti where rain showers had occurred and short grass had grown. Normally the wildebeest would have journeyed south from Kenyas Masai Mara during October / November. They would march along the eastern parts of the Serengeti arriving in the southern Serengeti sometime in December. Late November saw huge rain clouds develop and release desperately needed rains to the joy of people and wildlife alike! Since then, gigantic dark clouds have grown each day, exploding in thunderous afternoon downpours. After each storm the air is still and the landscape shines in all its beauty. It is the renaissance of life. The big wildebeest herds are now in the southern Serengeti. Thousands and thousands of wildebeest and zebra now roam the short grass plains beyond Naabi Hill and around Ndutu. The fresh grass shoots will allow newborn wildebeest to grow rapidly after the calving season occurs in February. In Tarangire the migratory animal herds have already dispersed across the Maasai Steppe and will not be back until the next dry season. Buffalo in the Ngorongoro Crater have returned to health after dozens died during the drought. Back to The Wildebeest Migration Made Simple Links to other pages: ULTIMATE AFRICA
