The Blue Train was recently voted the world's leading luxury train by over 250,000 travel agents in 181 countries at the World Travel Awards. The Blue Train offers the discerning traveler a choice of journeys into a timeless world of grace, elegance and romance, where some of the world's most dramatic scenery stirs the imagination and luxurious comfort soothes the body and soul. While the Blue Train has been synonymous with unsurpassed luxury travel since 1946, a new train took to the tracks in 1997 and has now been joined by a second identical sister train, which was introduced in 1998. By day, the elegantly furnished suites offer generous lounge chairs, which afford unequalled views of Africa. As night falls the suites become sumptuous and subtly lit bedrooms clothed in fine cotton linen and duvets. Considerable attention is paid to guests' needs. The train accommodates 84 passengers in 18 carriages, 11 of which are guest coaches.

Bongani Mountain Lodge, Mthethomusha Reserve - There is a place in Africa where lion, elephant and rhinoceros walk ancient paths once trodden by the San (Bushman). Their gallery of more than 200 rock frescoes is a priceless legacy. When you walk through the narrow rock passage leading here, legend has it that you may become more fertile. This place is Bongani Mountain Lodge, a piece of Africa perched atop a granite mountain with views that will open your mind and heart. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick roamed these giant rock walls with his dog, Jock of the Bushveld. He wrote: "a place to rest and dream, where there is neither stir nor sound". But there are sounds: the roaring of a lion, the shussh shussh as a herd of elephant moves through the valleys below, the cough of a leopard and the grunts of buffalo as they move through the 8,000 hectare Mthethomusha Game Reserve, an exclusive extension of the Kruger National Park. Bongani has 20 chalets, nine suites and one Presidential suite. The rooms are spread out across the mountain ridge and surrounded by impressive outcrops of granite. All the chalets and suites have a verandah and en suite bathroom with air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Suites are ideal for families with small children as there are sleeper couches in the lounge area. The Presidential Suite, also known as the Madiba Suite, is exceptional, with a large private lounge, a sweeping view of the valley below and a kitchen for private dining (not self-catering). The name is inspired by Nelson Mandela who favors the lodge as a holiday retreat. Madiba is Mr. Mandela's clan name, and the name by which he is affectionately known throughout South Africa. Bongani Mountain Lodge is a subtle balance between timber, thatch and striking colored fabrics. The design emphasis is on modern elements interspersed with decorative African motifs. The furniture is a funky, eclectic mixture of traditional ethnic design and Afro-chic. Central guest areas overlook a timber game viewing deck and have breathtaking views of the imposing Lebombo and Malalane Mountain ranges. The lodge has a lounge, bar, well stocked curio shop and inviting swimming pool. Activities include day and night wildlife viewing drives in open 4x4 vehicles, and nature walks exploring the wealth of San Bushman rock art sites for which the area is famous. Bongani also has a strong cultural tourism program. The Matsulu Theater Group perform plays with powerful environmental and social messages for guests as an optional extra. One of their soul-stirring performances depicts the history, aspirations and indigenous problem-solving skills of the local community, who have inhabited the mountains for hundreds of years. They also perform a play enacting a story of the plight of the black rhino. A community visit is also available.

Bushman's Kloof, Clanwilliam - Bushman's Kloof is an ecological oasis situated between the rugged foothills of the Cederberg mountains and the plains of the Great Karoo. Botanical walks, river and bush trails, mountain hikes and bird watching are also available. Sunset wildlife viewing drives in open landrovers are one of the highlights of the day. The lodges all have designer en suite bathrooms and private terraces with magnificent views over rolling lawns, the river and on to dramatic rock formations. The camp is set in the most beautiful location, and offers eight superbly appointed tented rooms with en suite bathrooms. There is a separate pub/dining area. The entire camp is raised up on a wooden deck and linked with a walkway several meters above the ground under a canopy of giant fig trees. There is a swimming pool. Good numbers of black rhino, white rhino, buffalo, hippo and crocodile occur, while red duiker, giraffe, nyala and suni are all fairly common. Leopard and hyena are in the reserve. Ndumo is considered by many to be the finest birdwatching locality in South Africa. Over 400 species 60% of South Africa's birds have been recorded in the area. Time at Ndumo is spent on nature walks - often tracking rhino. Wildlife viewing drives in open 4x4 vehicles around the various pans are a highlight. A new activity is boating on Banzi Pan (water levels permitting) and tiger fishing at Ndumo is great (especially on a fly-fishing rod).

Phinda Forest Lodge, Zululand - Literally hand-built by local Zulu people to minimize impact on the rare Sand Forest, these 16 stilted glass chalets float between the forest floor below and towering Torchwood trees above. Within these unique habitats no luxury has been overlooked, from beechwood and slate floors, to air-conditioning and hand towels tied with lichen. At Forest Lodge walls have become windows, opening up to the canopy beyond. Abounding with a variety of wildlife, Phinda Forest Lodge offers spectacular twice daily wildlife viewing drives in open vehicles and guided bush walks beneath the shadowy canopies of the forests. The award-winning Phinda Forest Lodge is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Phinda Vlei Lodge, Zululand - Six suites, crafted from thatch, teak and glass, are suspended above the Sand Forest floor. The air-conditioned suites overlook a natural vlei system. The airy double bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with a bath and shower. You can enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner on your outdoor viewing deck or cool down in your private plunge pool. The suites feature ethnic fabrics, hand-crafted cane and timber-framed panels. The décor is a subtle blend of North and West African styles with hints of Balinese influences. Phinda Rock Lodge, Zululand - The ingenious stone and wood cliff chalets of Phinda Rock Lodge   are chiseled into the rock face overlooking the impressive Leopard Rock. This is one of the few places in the world where you can sip your drink while watching Bateleur eagles swoop by at eye-level. Each of the six suites has a large bedroom and an en suite bathroom with bath and shower. Each suite, suspended from the edge of the rocky cliff, has its own private lounge, deck and plunge pool, all offering unrivalled views. Three suites have both indoor and outdoor showers. Overlooking scenic Leopard Rock, the lodge's rough-hewn sandstone and adobe walls and ochre-packed roofs cling to the rock face. A beautiful extension of the natural environment, the rock foundations blend seamlessly into the mountain's contours. The suites are decorated with artwork from Spain and Mexico. The color scheme is warm and inviting, blending beautifully with the ochre mud-packed walls ("adobe" style). Terminalia wood, gathered from the bush-clearing project in the north of the reserve, is used as a supporting feature. Expanses of windows frame views of impressive rock formations, and fill the rooms with light. In the private lounge, a beautiful sisal rug is complemented by comfortable lounge chairs, perfect for relaxing and admiring the view. The Palace of the Lost City, Sun City - The story goes… Centuries before tall ships were dreamed of, legend tells of a people from the north of Africa who journeyed southwards to seek a new world of peace and plenty. Eventually they settled in a green valley encircled by ancient hills. But when an earthquake destroyed their magnificent architecture, they were forced to abandon it to the concealing growth of time. So the Lost City and its beautiful palace lived on only in memory, until "Rediscovered" at Sun City. It was restored in 1992 as an integral part of the stunning entertainment and sports amenities of this amazing leisure resort. The architecture of the Palace pays homage to both art and nature. From the majestic entrance with its mosaic marble floors, soaring columns and the eighty feet high frescoed rotunda, to many intricate design accents taken directly from nature. The Palace's 338 rooms and suites all have views over water, jungle or the valley of waves, and have been designed with royal hospitality in mind. They are decorated in a unique style, with evocative African colors and intricately hand-carved furnishings, which reflect the rich flora and fauna of the area. The Palace has several wonderful restaurants and bars that can only be accessed by hotel guests. There is a most incredible pool area with abundant waterfalls. Between the Palace and the Cascades Hotel guests may enjoy water activities at the Wave Pool including water slides and a man-made beach. There are several casinos in the Sun City Complex. Bordering the Sun City Leisure Resort is the 137,000 acre Pilanesberg National Park which is home to the Big Five wildlife species: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino. Balloon trips over the natural amphitheater created by several rings of 1,2 million-year-old volcanic hills, provide an unforgettable aerial perspective, and safaris from Sun City in the early morning and late afternoon offer the chance of viewing an exceptionally wide variety of animals and birds.

Rocktail Bay, Northern Natal - Situated in northern Natal, within the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve and adjoining the Maputaland Marine Reserve, is Rocktail Bay Lodge. This lodge lies within a proclaimed World Heritage Site and is considered by many experts to be one of the top 10 dive locations in the world!!! The secluded lodge is situated meters from the Indian Ocean in the coastal forest, just behind the first row of forested dunes. It offers perhaps the most private beach experience in South Africa on 40 kilometers of unspoilt, undeveloped and pristine coastline. Note that this not a tropical beach lined with palm trees...only low growing shrubs and trees. Guests are accommodated in eleven wood and thatch "treehouse" chalets raised up on stilts into the forest canopy. The chalets are basic with proper beds, solar lighting, a ceiling fan, wardrobe and other furnishings. Each chalet has an en suite shower and toilet and an outdoor shower. The main area includes a thatched open air dining room, lounge, bar and swimming pool with sun deck for those who want to relax around the lodge. The highlight here is the miles and miles of pristine and undeveloped coastline. In addition to simply sunning yourself on the clean golden beaches, a variety of guided activities are available. The Indian Ocean is ideal for snorkeling in search of tropical fish (flippers and snorkels may be borrowed at the lodge), while surf and fly fishing is among the best on the east coast. Nature walks through the coastal forest and grasslands, or drives in open 4x4 vehicles to Black Rock and other localities will enthrall naturalists and photographers. In summer, nocturnal walks and drives along the beach in search of egg~laying sea turtles are a highlight. Boogie boarding and fishing are also on offer. Scuba diving is an optional extra that is WELL WORTH IT!!! While diving guests may see numerous shark species, a wide array of colorful fish including butterfly fish and larger wahoo, marlin and rays and eels! During certain times of the year guests may also see migrating humpback and southern right whales and leatherback and loggerhead turtles. The vice president of Mares, a wonderfully outgoing Italian man named Gianni, claimed it was only behind the Maldives and Caymen Islands in quality. He placed Rocktail within the top 15 dive spots in the world. He has completed over 5,000 dives in his life. Harpers and Queen in the UK voted Rocktail Bay as the joint best dive experience in the world

Roggeland Country House, Cape Winelands - Located in the Paarl wine region and set in a sea of vineyard ringed by the Drakenstein Mountains, Roggeland's thatched roofed cottages and sweeping gardens are simply beautiful. Your hosts Mr. and Mrs. Spenceley Wright bubble over with enthusiasm. The food is to die for! In the last 4 years the have not repeated a menu - not once! The lodge is very exclusive and caters to only 16 guests at any time. Roggeland has been listed as one of the 50 best hotels in the world and critics have quoted "those in the know call Roggeland one of the world's 20 best hotels."

Rovos Rail - Rovos Rail revisits the golden age of luxury train travel. Rovos Rail offers unique train safaris through some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa. Once on board the train you have stepped back nearly a hundred years. Rich mahogonies, the dark green and cream livery of Rovos, the sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau lamps, the sparkling silver and crystal all contribute to the period style, that is always tempered by regard for comfort. The lounge cars and dining cars are superb and provide a fascinating historical ambience. Breakfast, lunch and a sublimely elegant dinner, for which many guests prefer to dress more formally, are inclusive. After lunch or dinner, many travelers retire to the deeply cushioned armchairs of the observation car for coffee and liqueurs where the glassed end wall affords magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. There is also a small exterior viewing platform on which to take the air, particularly popular with enthusiasts whilst travelling under steam. Bedrooms combine the opulence of pre-war travel with subtle modern innovations. Royal Suites are named after colorful characters from the Victorian era in South Africa, such as Cecil Rhodes. Spacious (16 square meters) and elegant, the air conditioned suites accommodate two people and have a private lounge area. En suite bathrooms combine original fittings, including a generously sized roll-top bath, with the modern technology of hot showers, hair dryers and shaver plugs and they are stocked with a particularly glamorous selection of Molton Brown bath goodies. Each of these self-indulgent suites takes up half a carriage! De Luxe Suites (11 square meters) are also glamorously appointed with en-suite shower rooms and lounge areas, occupying approximately one third of a carriage. Room service tags are hung outside the room and are almost immediately rewarded by a knock on the door - the staff are wonderfully helpful and efficient. The routes taken by Rovos Rail are varied and take in some of the most glorious sights Africa has to offer. Imagine crossing the spectacular Victoria Falls bridge, or exploring the fabulous scenery of the Garden Route from the observation car - with Rovos Rail and their two "Pride of Africa" trains. Rovos Rail takes a maximum of 72 passengers and a part of each journey is almost always under steam. Rovos Rail compares very well with the Blue Train. We would note that Rovos Rails rooms are larger, and the beds do not fold into the wall as they do on the Blue Train. Therefore you can rest at any time without having your butler make up your bed. The downside is that Rovos Rail trains are louder and "clunkier" for lack of a more suitable word. More of an experience, however so much so that the train stops during the night so guests may sleep properly. Rovos Rail is privately owned, unlike the Blue Train, which is owned by Spoornet, a South African Government agency.
