Survivor III to Boost Kenyan Tourism, July 5 2001 Survivor III will be filmed in Kenya's Shaba Reserve. Very soon, Kenya, in particular the Shaba Game Reserve, will be viewed by over 60 million Americans and more viewers worldwide for 13 straight weeks. "We could never pay for this kind of publicity abroad. Even if we wanted to, it would have been far too expensive," says Mrs. Betty Buyu, the managing director of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB). KTB reckons that the impact of this production being brought to Kenya will have lasting effects. " If for instance we were to market Kenya as a tourism destination on CNN for only 30 seconds it would have cost us around US $300,000 - something that we can not even imagine to afford," adds Buyu. According to Mr. Robbin Hollister, the location manager of Mwandiga Productions, a local firm contracted to facilitate the production of Survivor III, "Let us milk this show for the enormous publicity that it gives us!" The Isiolo county council, under which the Shaba Game Reserve falls has been paid 18 million Kenyan shillings (US $230,000) for the location. Over 60,000 applicants from all over the United States applied. The contestants, both men and women, are divided into two groups and "abandoned" in the wild to fight for survival over forty days.
