Survivor Host Talks about Survivor 3 When it's the dead of night and you hear the sound of a lion breathing right outside your tent, you realize it's the real deal. Does that happen on the next Survivor? Host Jeff Probst doesn't say so directly, but in setting the stage for season three of TV's most popular reality-based series, he stresses it always takes the contestants time to realize the warnings they are given are real. "There is no invisible CBS wall protecting you," he says they were told repeatedly. "I would say, 'You need to have a sentry every night.' And in the beginning, I don't know how seriously they took that." Survivor: Africa debuts on CBS on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001. This time the 16 contestants will duke it out within the boundaries of the semi-arid Shaba National Reserve, a nature park north of Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to their own psychological manipulations, the Samburu and Boran tribes will have to deal with dust, malaria-bearing mosquitoes and wild animals, to say nothing of the various reward-driven and bordering-on-sadistic challenges thought up by the show's producers. Probst says the crew was protected by a driver who knew what precautions to take ("don't get out of the truck, don't get between an animal and water") but that it dawned slowly on the contestants that they were on their own. He says the first thing viewers will notice about the new series is that Africa means epic. "It really is in scale so much different than anything we've done, simply by nature of the fact that you are in Africa," he says. "It is 100,000 acres of wild game. You know, from huge elephants to leopards and lions and zebras and wildebeests and hyenas, snakes, giraffes coming by. Every day and every moment you are exposed. So, in that sense, for the survivors it was awe-inspiring." But Probst says the first priority was to make a fire to boil the polluted water. "It's hot out there. If you go one day without water you're in trouble. And it's the dustiest place I've ever been!" Probst wouldn't reveal if there were any emergency evacuations or animals killed, as happened in the outback last season. But he says it isn't about that, it's more about the social politics. "Putting 16 people into a stressful situation and letting conflict reveal character and watching what happens when push comes to shove. That's always the interesting aspect."
