Environmental Protection Assured, August 1 2001 The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) assured Kenyans that producers of Survivor III will not pollute the environment in the Shaba Game Reserve in Isiolo District. KTB said top industry officials had visited the site after environmental concerns were raised by some critics. The Managing Director of KTB, Mrs. Beatrice Buyu, expressed satisfaction with steps instituted to minimize the environmental impact. Survivor's 'Mission Statement' acknowledges that "to work in a national reserve anywhere in the world is not a privilege to be abused." CBS has a state-of-the-art portable sewage treatment plants. Resultant treated water is first tested and when confirmed to be free from harmful bacteria is used for the suppression of dust on roads being used by the production crew. To prevent non-biodegradable waste packaging, members of the crew have opted to install a sophisticated water treatment process to provide portable water rather than relying on packaged products. They also reportedly use paper cups instead of plastic, and where facilities exist, use recycled materials. Polythene waste, oils and paints are all returned to Nairobi for re-use or safe disposal. Vegetable waste is the only material committed to pit burial. The natural environment has not been cleared anywhere and each filming location is approved by the senior warden of Shaba prior to occupation or implementation. Written application is also reportedly obtained prior to importation of any materials with a written guarantee that all such materials will be removed upon completion.
