Hotels, Lodges and Camps of Mozambique Our list of Mozambique's finest hotels, lodges and tented camps - properties we consider truly special and recommend to our clients.
Mozambique is a superb “sand and sun” add-on to a southern Africa safari however the country’s tourism infrastructure is weak. We are therefore very conservative in choosing where to send our clients. We want to make sure our clients are impressed with not only their beach accommodations but also service standards and ease of getting to and from their resort.
Azura, Benguerra Island, Mozambique - The perfect island escape; and only 1 hour from the luxury safari lodges of South Africa’s Kruger National Park! Miles of pure white sand that squeaks underfoot. Tranquil turquoise seas crisscrossed by local dhows plying their trade. Swaying palms and gentle breezes. Endless sunshine by day… star studded nights. Azura is Mozambique’s first luxury eco-boutique retreat. Built and operated in partnership with the local community, it has just 15 villas, designed for the ultimate in pampering and privacy. The villas blend modern chic with all that is traditional in Mozambique. The creature comforts you would expect from a luxury boutique resort are set off by beautifully carved beams and traditional artwork beneath a local thatched jekka roof. Each private beachfront villa has its own sparking pool, air conditioning, ceiling fans, a large bathroom with panoramic bath, indoor and outdoor showers, minibar, sundeck, beachside sala, and butler service. The Presidential Villa has two en suite bedrooms, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, a sitting room with fireplace, dining area, large infinity pool and Jacuzzi. It is located just footsteps from the beach at the end of the property to ensure maximum privacy. The 11 Infinity Beach Villas have private infinity pools. The 3 Luxury Beach Villas have private plunge pools. The main areas, like the villas, are furnished with cool contemporary cottons and the textures of Africa. They include a formal dining room, lounge, reception area, and library with widescreen TV and internet access. There is a spa with local treatments as well. Imagine being rubbed down with ground coconut shells and natural spices, covered head to toe with tamarind and aloe, and gently massaged with warm marula oil! The food experience at Azura is incredible. Fresh local Mozambican produce, much of it home caught or home grown, is put together with contemporary style and flair. The chef’s signature dishes will not disappoint, nor will the extensive wine cellar which includes fine wines flown direct from the owner’s chateau in France’s Loire Valley. Where to eat is as much of a decision as what to eat! The main restaurant has magnificent uninterrupted views. The Gecko Deck offers informal dining with your feet in the sand or the lodge will pack a picnic of your choosing and whisk you off to a secluded spot on your own. Nothing beats dining by candlelight on the beach beneath the stars. The lodge has a water sports center which offers kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, big game and salt water fly fishing, and diving. A 40 foot traditionally carved dhow is moored offshore and available for guest use at all times (sunset cruises are stunning!). You may go out with the Dugong (manatee) protection team or help release turtles from their nests on the lodge’s shores. Track down humpback whales or swim with the dolphins who are regular visitors to the beach. There are land based activities too. Take a tour of the island, by Land Rover or on foot, and experience the local culture. Climb the dunes, some of which are scattered with the remnants of ancient Arab pottery. Visit the island’s lakes and spot a crocodile or two. Take a long walk and the lodge will meet you with a picnic. Day trips to Vilanculos may also be arranged.
Indigo Bay, Bazaruto, Mozambique - Indigo Bay offers the most luxurious accommodation in the Bazaruto Archipelago. The Island of Bazaruto is a short, two hour, flight from Johannesburg, South Africa. The island boasts powdery white beaches and reefs teaming with dolphin, game fish and giant lobster. The protected dugong swims in the shallow, crystal clear waters that are also home to abundant starfish, soft corals, anemones, seahorses and a dazzling array of beautiful fish. Indigo Bay comprises a total of 30 chalets and 14 villas, all excellently situated on and around the beach. Each of the thatch and reed chalets are sheltered and secluded with direct access to the beach and the warm Indian Ocean. All rooms are air conditioned, fully mosquito screened, have en suite bathrooms with an additional outdoor shower, dressing room, verandah, living area, mini-bar, satellite TV, and electronic safe. The honeymoon chalet and the villas have private splash pools. In addition the villas have a kitchen and outdoor dining area. 1 villa has a private plunge pool. Another has a private pool. The lodge’s main area includes a restaurant, patio bar, and swimming pool. Cuisine is outstanding relying heavily on the abundance of freshly caught fish and seafood. The lodge has a fully equipped diving facility with PADI/NAUI dive instructors to take you to breathtakingly unspoiled reefs. For the more adventurous there's the thrill of a night dive or diving to one of the many wrecks in the area. The Mozambique Channel offers anglers the experience and exhilaration of fighting marlin and other game fish. The lodge also offers waterskiing, kayaking, windsurfing, Hobiecat sailing, Landrovers for scenic island drives, sand boarding, and horseback riding. Experienced guides will enhance your appreciation of birdwatching (including flamingoes) and star-gazing opportunities. |
