South African Airways Economy Class Information |
South African Airways Premier Class Information South African Airways direct, daily service from New York and Washington DC to Johannesburg, South Africa is, by far, the most popular route for Americans traveling to southern Africa. Not only is it the quickest routing it is typically the best value. Ultimate Africa has access to South African Airways lowest fares starting at US $650 in economy and US $6,380 in Premier Class. We are happy to handle all air ticket arrangements for Ultimate Africa client’s purchasing pre-packaged or tailor-made / custom tours through our office. We do not handle air ticket bookings by themselves or for travelers who have made their safari arrangements elsewhere. There are two classes of service aboard the Airbus A340–600 aircraft: 291 economy seats and 42 Premier seats (a combination of business and first class at business class prices). Premier class: true flat-bed seats in a 2 x 2 x 2 configuration. They have been voted "the most comfortable Business Class Flat-bed Seat in the World” by Skytrax. Each full flat-bed seat has a pitch of 73 inches (three automatic settings include Upright, Cradle and Bed with variable settings for leg rest, seat height, lumbar support and back rest), ultra-modern shell with privacy screen, large 1 piece tray table and individual cocktail tables, a state of the art coat hook, its own power supply for laptops (the power is 110 v AC and interfaces with a normal European 2 pin plug), individual reading lights with four settings, individually adjustable lumbar support with massage, articulated armrest which flattens to widen the bed to 24 inches (one of the widest in the industry), adjustable headrest, full on demand audio-video (including a selection of 15 movies, 12 shorts and 10 games), a telephone (you can call the ground or use the seat-to-seat call function - for calling other seats on board), large pillows and snug duvets ensure a comfortable night’s rest, a special amenity kit packed with toiletries, an à la carte restaurant-dining experience (eat what you want, when you wish. Gourmet meals are specially plated in the galley to ensure freshness), fine boutique Champagnes and South African wines. In our opinion it is the best way to get from North America to Southern Africa, period. Travelers have noted: It’s by far the best business class long haul product that exists. The flat seats are like normal beds with plenty of space - nice pillow and duvet. The best of the new business class flat bed seats. The duvets and pillows were wonderful. The pitch at 73 inches between seats is the greatest we have seen. You can sleep on your back or either side. Privacy is better than usual. Hoods over head and shoulders decrease noise from other travelers. Easily the best. These seats are simply the best. More comfortable than British Airways or Virgin and they certainly beat all of the Asian airlines. Well done to South African Airways for getting this right! The seat comfort was the best I have ever experienced. The full flat seat along with duvet and most comfortable pillow was the next best thing to being in my own bed. Never seen so much pitch. Seat reclined totally flat and was very comfortable. Thick warm duvets and big pillows just added to the experience. Will never go back to BA or Virgin on this route again. Truly a flat-bed and very comfortable. The duvet and pillow were exceptional. This aircraft is the gold standard. Flight times: Washington DC (IAD – Johannesburg (JNB), 17.5 hours with a refueling stop in Dakar Johannesburg (JNB) – Washington DC (IAD) 18 hours with a refueling stop in Dakar New York (JFK) – Johannesburg (JNB), 15 hours non stop Johannesburg (JNB) – New York (JFK), 16 hours non stop Insiders tip: If you are on a South African Airways flight that stops in Dakar, Senegal (West Africa) be prepared for turbulence. This is a common experience which the pilots are expecting and are trained to handle. |
