Hotels, Lodges and Camps of Tanzania and Zanzibar Tanzania is a country of stunningly beautiful landscapes, wildlife and cultures. In a land where even the most organized tour companies find it hard to run a smooth operation (east Africa tends to be less efficient and travelers and tour operators experience more problems than in southern African countries such as Botswana, Namibia and South Africa) it is good to know a large company with extensive resources is there to back up our clients. In Tanzania and Zanzibar Ultimate Africa works very closely with Conservation Corporation Africa and their circuit of lodges and camps (in addition to a select handful of other high end properties). Please note that most Tanzanian properties are closed April through May due to the long rains.
Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha, Tanzania – The first 5 star accommodations in Arusha. Situated on the 2,100 acre Burka Coffee estate, the lodge has 21 private chalets each with multi-level living areas, en-suite facilities, log fireplaces, and large balconies with views to Mount Meru. The lodge has a swimming pool and spa. Dinner is served at very popular Redd’s African Grill House. Being a working coffee plantation guests have the opportunity to observe the roasting process, taste coffee blends, and purchase fresh roasted beans. Other optional activities include horse riding, mountain biking, and nature walks.
Beho Beho, Selous, Tanzania – Beho Beho was the first property to be sited in the 55,000 square kilometer Selous - not on the banks, or the flood plains of the mighty Rufiji River, but in the highlands so as to enjoy the cooling breezes from which its name is derived. Designed for comfort, Beho Beho's 8 stone built and palm thatched cottages, are not only a refuge from the equatorial sun nor are they just for sleeping. These spacious suites reveal unrivalled vistas of the Africa bush and are designed as private 'homes' with individuality and flair. Each has a verandah, a separate dressing room leading into an en-suite bathroom with twin basins, high flush toilet and an open air shower. The lodge’s main area includes an open sided lounge and dining area, together with the cocktail bar and 'billiards room'. These provide a sophisticated setting for post safari relaxation and the swimming pool and deck, an ideal place to cool off. A specialty of the camp are the guided walking safaris, usually starting early in the morning, before the heat of the day, the walks can last from an hour to three hours culminating in breakfast at a prearranged shady spot or at a rendezvous with a vehicle to go back to camp for a relaxing brunch. Afternoon walks can also be very rewarding, along the Beho Beho River to meet a vehicle well supplied with welcome sundowner drinks, before the darkness comes and it is time to head back to camp. For drives Beho Beho has a fleet of specially designed open-sided, but shaded safari vehicles. These are not the pop-up roof type of enclosed safari cruiser found in the popular National parks. Beho Beho also has a number of boats stationed at Lake Tagalala, about 30 minutes drive away from the camp. These excursions, usually done in the morning, offer close encounter with the resident hippos and crocodiles as well as an amazing number of bird species, culminating in breakfast under a shady tree and a walk to the nearby hot springs for a therapeutic swim in the warm mineral waters. But it is not always necessary to leave camp to witness excellent wildlife. The camp appears to be on a crossroads of animal migratory routes and elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, wild dog and hyena, to name just a few, wander freely through the camp.
Emerson’s and Green Hotel, Zanzibar - Situated in Stone Town, Emerson House was an Omani palace which has been carefully restored to its original grandeur. This hotel breathes old world charm and is perfect for travelers looking for an authentic experience. Atmosphere is of principal import and the furnishings are original Zanzibari antiques that create impressions of Arabian nights and sultan princesses escaping for romance. There are 10 rooms with en suite facilities. Some rooms are Sultan-sized with 20 foot ceilings, carved doors, original stucco décor and hand painted glass lamps and window panes. Other rooms are much smaller and quirky – some with ceiling fans, others with air conditioning that almost make the experience bearable. Dinner is served on a rooftop restaurant surrounded by minarets and temple towers - one of the most extraordinarily romantic eating venues in the world! Eighty feet above the Stone Town and sitting on Persian carpets and pillows, dinner here feels like a ride on a magic carpet (and the next day your stomach may feel as if it is on a magic carpet ride – Emerson’s and Green is authentic in more ways than one! We suggest our clients enjoy sunset drinks on the rooftop before moving on to a more sanitary restaurant for dinner). The dining room is open on all sides and the sun may be watched setting over the Indian Ocean each evening.
Faru Faru River Lodge, Serengeti, Tanzania - The 400,000 acre Grumeti Reserve is located adjacent to the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, bordering the national park. The private wildlife viewing concession, which includes the Ikorongo Game Reserve, Grumeti Game Reserve and Fort Ikoma Open Area, offers seclusion and exclusivity, highlighted by the annual wildebeest migration, which passes through these areas in the months of June, July and August and again in November. Faru Faru River Lodge is built on a gently sloping hill, overlooking a waterhole and the Grumeti River. It is built in the style of a classic East African safari camp, with the suites and lodge areas decorated as a throwback to the timeless Colonial era. Each of the 6 air-conditioned suites feature en suite bathroom with bath and shower, dressing area with vanity table and hair dryer, electronic safe, air conditioning, private bar and fridge, sliding glass front wall, direct dial telephone and wireless internet. On your viewing deck you will find your own Swarovski spotting scope, from which you can enjoy the rugged landscape, whilst at the same time, the luxurious comfort of your suite. The lodge area offers a lounge and dining room, elevated viewing decks, heated rim flow plunge pool, spa, television with satellite and Colonial Trading Post. Professionally guided walks from Faru Faru along the Grumeti River, with its unrivalled spectrum of fauna and flora, are an unforgettable experience. Wildlife viewing drives are also on offer along with archery, lawn croquet, mountain biking, equestrian pursuits (the Equestrian Centre is situated adjacent to Sasakwa Lodge, and is home to sixteen horses and a mix of polo ponies. The Center includes a lunging arena, fenced paddock, and a walled 2.7 kilometer riding track, which can also be used for walking and jogging. More experienced riders can enjoy outrides onto the Serengeti plains. Tack is English style, and guests have the choice of either English or Western saddles. All horse activities are led by qualified professional horse guides), and hot air ballooning. Grumeti Reserves works with the neighboring community through the Grumeti Community & Wildlife Conservation Fund (the "Grumeti Fund"), which has invested heavily in the region. Among the projects undertaken by the Fund is the planned reintroduction of 25 Black Rhino to the Serengeti eco-system.
Fundu Lagoon, Zanzibar - Situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of Pemba Island, the sister island to Zanzibar, this property is wonderful for scuba diving. There are 14 bungalows, consisting of spacious tents, set under thatch roofs on wooden decks and each, with a view over the ocean. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by sand walkways. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront with the remaining on an elevated position overlooking the ocean. Two of our fourteen accommodations are suites with their own private chill out decks and plunge pools. The resort offers two bars, a television room, an excellent restaurant serving local and international cuisine and spa. Listed as one of the top diving locations in the world, Fundu Lagoon offers a fully-equipped PADI Resort Diving Center. In addition a range of watersports, including snorkeling and kayaking, are on offer.
Greystoke Mahale, Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania - On a far-flung beach along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, below a huge story-book tropical forest, is the tiny sanctuary of Greystoke Mahale. The water is as clear as gin, the air scented with jasmine, and the living very easy indeed. As you make the approach to Greystoke by dhow, the outline of the camp is visible against a backdrop of deep green forest and pale beach. The focal point of Greystoke is the bar and dining area rising up from the sand and loosely modeled on traditional Tongwe architecture. Your home at Greystoke Mahale is in wildly exotic wooden bandas looking out across the beach, with interiors fashioned from seasoned dhow timber. The 6 suites are open-fronted, with adjoining bathrooms, and upstairs chill-out decks, designed for the most demanding castaway. The slopes of the Mahale Mountains National Park rise behind camp, home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees, over 1,000. Within hiking distance is one such group of 60. Every day you can venture out into the forest to observe them, our closest relatives, as they groom, wrestle and forage across the leafy floor. There is also the opportunity to observe leopard, bushbuck, bushpig, and a multitude of birds and butterflies as you walk amongst the giant vines and waterfalls. The lake’s waters sparkle with over 250 species of tropical fish and after a day of “chimping” you can snorkel or swim, fish or kayak along the lake shore. In the evening you can enjoy sundowner drinks aboard the dhow followed by a private barefoot dinner on the beach, or simply relax in the library. For those looking to quench their thirst there’s the bar of all bars on the rocks of the headland, with fresh sashimi and iced vodka, and a view out west across the mighty waters of the lake. Most guests will see the chimps at least once in a 3-4 day stay, but a sighting is not always guaranteed. Whilst they could be right behind camp one day, the next they could be high in the mountains. The maximum group size for chimp viewing is 6.
Grumeti River Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania – In the untouched seclusion of a remote, idyllic valley in the western corridor of the Serengeti National Park, 50km east of Lake Victoria, lies Grumeti River Camp. Flanked by two hillsides, this blissful camp nestles beneath tall riverine trees on the banks of the Grumeti River. Every year during the great migration, wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores plunge into the Grumeti River, risking the jaws of some of the largest crocodiles on earth. In addition some of Africa’s largest hippo greet you through watery carpets of lilies. Black and white colobus monkeys with their spectacular pied coats flash through the bird-filled riverine trees, and the area boasts one of the highest densities of cheetah in Africa. At night, the haunting primeval calls of hyena, leopard and lion echo through the shadowy branches. Intimate and distinctive, Grumeti has just 10 spacious tents with en suite bathrooms and showers open to the sun and stars. Each flamboyant tent perches on a raised platform and is filled with hand-sculpted African finishes, hand-blown Kenyan glassware and the unexpected colors of bright lime, scarlet, bronze, orange and crimson. The main areas, including the pool, overlook the water lettuce-edged river. There is a lounge and domed bar. The spacious decks are perfect for sundowners overlooking the river. Solar panels have replaced electric power to eliminate noise and pollution. Twice daily interpretive game drives in closed Land Rovers explore the Serengeti savannahs and woodlands, boasting the largest mass of free-ranging animals on earth. A stunning variety of wildlife may be approached at close range on these morning and afternoon wildlife excursions. Sundowners on the Kirawira Hills are a special treat after a day's safari.

Kirawira Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania – Superb location! Standing high on the bluff of a bush-cloaked ridge, commanding panoramic views over the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti National Park, Kirawira Camp is the epitome of colonially-styled safari luxury. Designed in typically Edwardian style, it features an elegant central meeting tent evocatively furnished with a tasteful selection of chintz-covered chaises lounges, jewel-hued Persian rugs, and leather-bound traveling cases. There is a bar, swimming pool and ‘Sundowner’ terrace looking out over gently sloping acacia groves towards the lilac-grey hills and lion-gold plains of the Serengeti’s Western Corridor. The colonial ambiance of the 25 tented rooms evokes colorful memories of the famous safaris of days gone by. The rooms feature generous four-poster beds, hand-made patchwork quilts, steamer-trunk wardrobes, brass lamps, sepia photographs and rosewood escritoires, whilst to the rear of each tent is an elegant mahogany-paneled bathroom with twin marble washstands, polished brass fittings and classic black-and-white tiled Edwardian shower and lavatory. Each room has a personal valet. Activities include morning and afternoon wildlife viewing drives and visits to local Ikoma and Sikuma villages / schools. The most exclusive of the Serena Group’s many safari venues; the exquisite Kirawira Tented Camp is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Klein's Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania – Klein’s Camp is set in an exclusive 25,000 acre private concession deep in the heart of Maasai territory, neighboring the buffalo-rich, northeastern Serengeti National Park. Klein's Camp follows the concept of Kenya's private game ranches, the first of its kind in Tanzania. Opened in 1995 Klein's Camp offers accommodation in 10 tastefully appointed cottages, each with en suite bathroom with shower, twin hand-basin and toilet, and a private veranda with breathtaking views of the valley below. The main lodge includes a dining area with large open fireplace and beautifully furnished bar/sitting area, both with sweeping views of the valley and the surrounding hills. A plunge pool is tucked into the hillside. Klein’s Camp is as much about the style and design of the lodge and the level of luxury provided as it is about the safari itself. The safari experience at Klein's Camp is enhanced by the fact that the camp is actually set outside the Serengeti Park boundaries. This means that the camp is able to offer both day and night wildlife viewing drives in open 4x4 vehicles and professionally guided walking safaris (in the private concession set aside for the exclusive use of Klein’s Camp guests - the ultimate private Tanzanian safari with no other vehicles for miles around). Most guests enjoy both the Klein’s Camp Reserve and the Serengeti National Park and thus pay double fees (reserve fees which go directly to the local Maasai villagers for schooling and agricultural support and park fees). In our opinion this is a small price to pay for such an incredible experience.
Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Lake Manyara, Tanzania – Tree Camp is about getting as close to nature as possible without sacrificing five-star comforts. Set back from the south west shores of Lake Manyara in a mahogany forest, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is the only camp in the small but incredibly diverse National Park. Lake Manyara is a natural soda lake that fluctuates dramatically according to rainy seasons; it is regularly visited by flamingos and is inhabited by hippos. The camp is best visited around July and November each year when the great migratory herds pass, sometimes crossing the Grumeti River right in front of camp. Additionally there is good resident game throughout the year, especially lion, leopard and elephant. The rooms' walls are in fact flaps, which can be rolled up to create the feel of a true open tree house. Together with the mosquito nets over each bed and the plush duvets, you may never wish to leave your room. The Baobab Bar is built around a gracious old Baobab and guests can enjoy cocktails whilst watching the incredible Tarangire sunsets. Leading off the bar, the dining area with its thatched roof and open sides is the perfect setting for the excellent cuisine. As it is located outside the Tarangire National Park, Treetops is able to offer activities such as walking safaris and mountain bike trails that cannot be conducted inside the park. Daytime wildlife viewing drives within the park are on offer in addition to night drives outside the park. There is also a swimming pool.
