2011 Client Testimonials This vacation was like no other I have ever had. We were in a different world. I never thought that we would come so close to the animals. The landsapes were beautiful. I will cherish the memories of this trip for a very long time. A. Santos and C. Chadkiewiez, November / December 2011, Hampden, Maine, USA
Our trip was just fabulous! Thank you so much for making it happen. S. Natarajan and C. Nair, November 2011, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, USA
It was an amazing trip! One that I always wanted to do, and finally managed at 81. In addition to seeing such a variety of wildlife, what really impressed me was the wonderful staff and people. They couldn’t do enough to make you feel at ease. And, of course, I met some great people who were also guests. R. Richardson, October 2011, Toronto, Canada
At Nkwali loved the hippo in front of our cabin at night. At Tena Tena we loved the atmosphere. Had their biggest tent and saw giraffe at the waterhole from my porch! Lots of elephants and puku. Chiawa was the best of all 4 camps! Outstanding in all aspects. Good lion and leopard sightings. Loved the surprise dinner in the river bed. Toka Leya - good rhino sightings and glad I saw Victoria Falls. Did the Livingstone Island Lunch and swam in Devils Pool! Overall I was very pleased with my Ultimate Africa Safaris experience. You guided me to consider Zambia. Your advice was well taken. Really enjoyed the smaller Robin Pope and Cummings Family camps. Job well done. C. Robert, October 2011, Ocean Pines, Maryland, USA
That was perfect! You could not have planned our vacation better or more professionally. Wilderness Safaris is a company you can be proud to do business with. The guides at each camp were super. They went out of their way to make our time in Africa as unforgettable as possible. Each camp deserves its own individual kudos. Chitabe was our first camp and they were great at breaking us in to the bush. We saw a baby elephant born there. An experience I will not forget. Xigera made a special private dinner for us because they heard it was my 50th birthday. It was very special and they even made me a birthday cake, too. Duma Tau was intense! The other camps prepared us for this stop. We saw the wild dogs hunt, kill and devour an impala. The puppies came later. Amazing. Then we saw a pride of lion attempt to take down a young elephant. We were all glad that the baby was able to walk away because the mother made it to the attack site quick enough to scare the lion away. What an experience! Our last stop was at Toka Leya in Zambia. You were right to say we could use this place to get back to civilization. The past week had a lot to absorb and process. The guide there knew we had seen just about everything we wanted to see except rhinos. The only 7 protected rhinos in the country were nearby. We also wanted to see Victoria Falls. So, because of time restraints in the morning, the guard contacted the park rangers and arranged for us to walk out to see the rhinos and be back to go to the Falls. I like how all the transfers to new camps were done during the midday so no activities were ever missed. Personalized service was important to us and you were successful. You have a customer for life. L. and S. Nemec, October 2011, Randolph, Massachusetts, USA
The trip was great, the people were great, transfers were superb. One word says it all – AWESOME!!! A. Morello and M. West, September 2011, Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA
Your knowledge of Tanzania was so helpful in planning our adventure! You knew the best places and ending in Zanzibar was paradise. Highlights include wildebeest migration at Singita, Crater Lodge and super relaxation at Kilindi on the beach. R. and K. Knos, September 2011, Billings, Montana, USA
It was an excellent experience. Lorna put up with us calling often with questions. C. and J. Garton, September 2011, Warington, Pennsylvania, USA
We enjoyed our safari very much. It was an Ultimate experience for us. We appreciated all the service and were so impressed by our guide’s sense of eco system and protection of animals. We travel a lot but this trip was the best. Thank you. D. Niu and H. Lu, August 2011, San Francisco, California, USA
Overall it was a great trip with outstanding wildlife viewing, varied activities and exceptional staff. We were treated like royalty at all of the camps. This was our second trip and we look forward to the third! B. and K. Hamilton, August 2011, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Dear Ian and Lorna - Thanks so much for organizing yet another wonderful trip. All of the camps were special, with unique qualities that set them apart from the others. Being met in all of the airports makes the trip so much more relaxing and enjoyable. That is truly a huge bonus. Your guys in Africa run a truly impressive organization – one that I hope would be a model for other tourist related businesses. Thanks for suggesting Sausage Tree Camp for our Zambia visit. It was a great way to begin the trip, as the accommodations were wonderfully comfortable and the staff warm and competent. Being near the water was relaxing and we enjoyed an evening sundowner cruise the day we arrived, followed by lunch on a sandbar one day and then fishing one evening. Fred and Mary Ellen and I also went on a guided walk one morning with George, one of the assistant managers along with Charles our guide and then a man from Fish and Wildlife. That was a great experience and I would encourage others to do that. We learned a lot about tracking, termite mounds, and animal behavior as well as picking up little nuggets of information about the flora and traditional uses of the plants. Savuti was out next camp and it was interesting to see the changes the influx of the water had brought about since we were there in 2008. At that time, the water had just begun to flow into the channel again, and that made for very interesting wildlife viewing, particularly the bird life as the birds waiting for the water to drive the mice and moles up out of the ground. Savuti had been a favorite from our previous visit. Our guide, Lets, was very good and was particularly helpful with guests and their cameras. Tom, as well as a couple of other folks we shared the land rover with, was assisted greatly by his advice of settings, etc. He was knowledgeable and friendly. A guide who we met the last time we were there, Goodman, remembered us even though we hadn’t ridden in his vehicle. So, in summary, we enjoyed our time in Savuti. Little Vumbura was a lovely experience – the setting was quite incredible, as you know. Again, we enjoyed the activities that a water camp offers as well as the incredible sunsets / sunrises viewed through the reeds. Dennis was our guide and was excellent in many ways. Being quite young he had an adolescent’s love of the chase! We spent 2 extended times with wild dogs – once following them as they went out on a kill. One evening Dennis took us out in a boat and led a great discussion on the flora in the channel. Likewise, the morning trip in the mekoro was pleasant and informative. Frank, the primary manager, was a pleasant young man. Mary Ellen and I had an interesting tour of the camp facilities led by Frank that we both enjoyed. This is a camp that I would repeat. Mombo lived up to its reputation in every way. It amazes me that the “tents” can be so spacious and truly elegant without seeming pretentious. My congratulations to the decorating consultant for striking just the right note. It was nice to have the option for a drink in one’s room as the deck in front of our tent provided amazing animal viewing as well as a great place to sit and read. Our guide was Doctor and he was probably the best guide we have ever had, with the possible exception of Brian, on our first trip when we visited Duma Tau. Doctor was patient, knowledgeable and relaxed – a mature person and a great guide. I suppose it stands to reason that some of the best guides would be at the premier camps. Seffo, who had been our guide in 2008 at Savuti, was at Mombo and remembered us. The ability of the guides and staff to remember guests is truly amazing - and makes a very positive impression to be sure. I am sure that the warm hospitality guests experience is part of the training, but is appears to come so naturally, that I have to think that the people of Botswana are by and large, a warm and friendly people, eager to show off their amazing country. Of course, there is a lot of staff at Mombo and we enjoyed meeting and visiting with many of them, particularly around the campfire. We didn’t see the guides ever at the campfire, with the exception of the meal in the Boma. I assume that may be part of the plan so that they have the management staff circulating among the guests in the evenings. We met a number of interesting and largely pleasant people at all of the camps, and particularly enjoyed all of the Australians that we met, who were gregarious and warm. I love being in the bush and it is hard to explain exactly why. There is something very primal about the experience and I am always struck by the great cycle of life that you witness when you are there. Everything seems to have a purpose or a use and nothing goes to waste. Everything eats something and, in turn, is eaten by something else. We have been blessed since our first trip to see several packs of wild dogs and this trip was no exception. We also got in on leopards mating as well as a den with about a dozen young Hyenas. Our guides were wonderfully informative about animal behaviors as well as “knowing” the particular animals in the area. So, in closing, thanks so much for setting us out on another memorable trip. We really appreciate your experience and thoughtfulness in setting up our itinerary. Staff at the airport, taking care of us and guiding us from one place to the next, was helpful. Despite the long transit time getting there and home, I would pack my bag again in a heartbeat! M. Gentry, September 2011 Olympia, Washington, USA
Ultimate Africa is excellent. Their team of representatives was always reachable, courteous and informative. Their product (the safari camps) were fantastic. Despite living in another country, the booking of our holiday was seamless. Gregory Lo, August 2011, Ennismore, Ontario, Canada
Fantastic experience from start to finish. Staff was, by far, the jewel in the crown of the organization. Thank you for the experience of a lifetime! A. and C. Tucker, August 2011, Cruton on Hudson, New York, USA
For our family this was the trip of a lifetime. We are still in awe over all we have experienced. The guides were key in our experience! Thank you and well done! The Jabbour Family, August / September 2011, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Exceptional trip. Only one complaint... disappointed we had to come home! G. and K. Crispo, August 2011, Fairfax California, USA
Words can hardly express how great a time we had! Botswana was beyond wonderful. Your choice of the Vic Falls Hotel on the Zimbabwe side was also perfect as the views from this side were incomparable. We met so many wonderful people, guests, guides and staff, and got a real good feel for African culture, including from our tour of Soweto on our first day. Now, we see the expertise and careful planning that you added to make the trip so memorable! Thankfully, after our first thinking about a east African group tour type trip, you rescued us to design such an intimate, revealing and impactful experience. With much appreciation, R. and M. Cohen, August 2011, Scarsdale, New York, USA
This was the most wonderful trip we have ever taken – from start to finish. Working with Ian and using Wilderness Safaris was unbelievable! I would highly recommend them to anyone. Every employee from guides, managers, cooks to pilots to airport people were unbelievable and so passionate about their jobs! And so friendly and knowledgeable. D. and D. Bock, August 2011, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Wow!!!!! What an amazing vacation and adventure experience. We are hooked and will return to Africa again, for sure. Everything was more than I could have imagined, exceeding all of my expectations. The game viewing was fabulous and the tents were amazing as well. All of the camps were great as was the food and staff. Thanks so much for all your help and the great adventure. C. Brousseau, August 2011, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda was a real bucket list experience. I will never forget the Genocide Memorial, the endless Serengeti Plains, the miracle of Ngorongoro Crater (and Crater Lodge – wow!), the baobab forests of Tarangire and all the elephants, and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean (even saw dolphins)!!! Could not have done it without you! Thanks again for all your help! B. Birch and Family, August 2011, New York, New York, USA
Ian - Many thanks to you and Lorna for a wonderful, unforgettable family trip. You covered every detail and never tired of answering our questions. Everything worked perfectly and the kids loved every second! Again thank you, thank you, for all. We hope to go again! V. Sappington and Family, July / August 2011, Easton, Maryland, USA
Excellent, beyond our expectations. Very knowledgeable, great advice to go to Zimbabwe. So glad we did. We want to go back to Africa and will only go through Ian Proctor and Lorna Davidson / Ultimate Africa Safaris! R. and S. Stocks, July / August 2011, Cardiff By The Sea, California, USA
This was a first trip to Africa and all of the knowledge and planning you shared with us was so helpful. If we had planned on our own, I don’t think we would have had such variety or well planned out itinerary as we did. We loved Kensington Place and Capetown. Next time (hopefully there will be a next time) I would spend a few more days. In Botswana the wildlife viewing was exceptional! The staff everywhere were so welcoming and there was even a mom and baby elephant at the pool when we arrived at our first camp. They were around for all three days we were there. We saw lions and leopards almost every drive as well as most of the other animals we wanted to see. Game was very plentiful and our guide got us so close to so many animals. AMAZING! In the Linyanti area one morning the drive began at 6:30 and we did not return to camp until 2:30, because of a leopard sighting and viewing. While at the Zambezi Sun Hotel we received an invitation for High Tea at the partner hotel and it was very nice. The breakfast was also very good. I guess we did view some wildlife, as a baboon jumped onto our table, looked at us and stole a sugar packet off the table. Our pilot from Savuti to Livingstone filed a new flight plan in Kasane so that he could fly us over the falls on our way in. It was beautiful. Wish I could book another trip right now. I would go back tomorrow. I think even if we had spent three weeks, we would have wanted more of Africa! C. Llewellyn, July 2011, Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada
Our Tanzanian honeymoon was beyond description. The picnic lunch in the Crater, the private dinner on the beach, the people who met us at the airport and whisked us to the front of the line… We received special treatment everywhere we went and I am quite sure this was because we booked with you. We ran into another couple who had also used your services and they too were having a great time. We have some incredible memories! Thanks again. F. and R. Strom, July 2011, Portland, Oregon, USA
Ian, thanks again for all the effort in setting up our trip to Africa. Everyone was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We had a great time and were thrilled with the accommodations and everything we experienced. We feel very lucky to have found Ultimate Africa Safaris! D. Menzies and Family, July 2011, Northville, Michigan, USA
We are back from our FABULOUS trip!! ALL top notch. The trip was perfectly. I cannot say one bad thing about the trip. We had the best time ever. It went smooth as glass without one glitch and we are dying to go back!! If you need my opinions for anyone please think of me--I could even do a commercial I am so excited! J. and B. Brown, June / July 2011, Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, USA
I wanted to thank you so much for setting up this trip. I really enjoyed working with you. It was everything you said it would be and more. We had a wonderful time - one which we will never forget and I will recommend you to everyone I talk to that is thinking of going, in fact already have to people we met on the trip. I am looking forward to another adventure, probably in another part of Africa with you guys. Until then J. and D. Broussard, July 2011, Kingwood, Texas, USA We had the trip of our lives (and we've travelled a lot). You did an amazing job organizing this for us. At Duba we had front row seats when the lions started swimming across the water. At Little Vumbura we all enjoyed the speed boat rides. It was great being able to follow wild dogs on a hunt. At Duma Tau leopard with her kill and more wild dogs. Need I say more? The Zambezi Sun Hotel was very nice considering the low cost. Great to have direct access to the Falls. We went 3 times. All of our reservations were handled quickly, politely and efficiently. Your help and advice was impeccable and invaluable. It was unbelievably useful to be able to draw upon your first hand experience and knowledge. It allowed us to make informed decisions regarding where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see and to be properly prepared for our trip. Everything was crystal clear. When our departure time arrived, I felt perfectly prepared - I had no questions. I didn't have to wonder about what would happen in certain situations and was confident that everything had been taken care of. Everyone was perfectly punctual, there was no waiting, there were no glitches - things couldn't have gone more smoothly. I would absolutely, without hesitation book a future trip with Ultimate Africa. I wish I could book all my future trips for all parts of the world with you. It was a perfect trip. M. Meltzer and Family, June 2011, Toronto Canada
I have been meaning to write to you ever since we returned from our trip. We had been discussing the possibility of a trip to Africa with Vic and Karen for several years. Given their experience in Africa, we thought it made sense to have them do the planning or at least selection an organization to work with. After speaking with numerous groups, they chose Ultimate Africa Safaris. But being on the sidelines of the planning process, we weren't exactly sure what to expect. Neither Jan or I had ever been to Africa before, let alone a safari of any kind. Our initial thought when the planning began was it sounded great but was not cheap. But, since we had delegated the planning, we weren't going to second guess what was going on. Karen kept explaining that it was expensive because everything had to be flown into these remote private camps. Well, I am pleased to tell you that this trip was worth EVERY PENNY! It was the best vacation we have ever had - and what I would call an experience of a lifetime! There really are no words to describe it. Everything about it was just amazing and fantastic! The camps, the guides, the food, the rooms, the animals, the airplane/helicopter rides, etc. Jan and I came away just in awe of the entire experience! Wow!!! You did a great job in putting this together and we are so grateful to have had the experience. Here are a few pictures from our trip! If you want a reference for the trip, call me any time!! S. Kahn and J. Pendleton, June 2011, Bedford, Massachusetts, USA
The trip you planned to Zimbabwe for us was the most fabulous adventure ever. Everything was beyond belief and expectation. The weather, the landscape, the tents, the safaris, the animals, the food, the people, the beauty of Africa – amazing! With your guidance we were prepared and with open minds we were totally accepting of everything that happened as it happened. There wasn't anything we would have changed if we were to do it again. Thanks you so much for your advice, quick responses to my many inquiries, reassurance, and expertise in Africa. We have passed your name along to several people who are interested in Africa. M. Meyer, June 2011, Rochester, Minnesota, USA
Ultimate Africa was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I had a lot of questions and each was answered quickly. I could not have asked for anything better, to each camp in the order that was planned. We had a fabulous time. I asked Ian about the scenery for June stating that I was a visual person and was concerned about not seeing green and having just brown and beaten down grasses. The landscape was beautiful, lots of different topography, all of which was amazing. Tons of different animals. It was an exhilarating experience. P. McClean, June 2011, Rochester, Minnesota, USA
Ultimate Africa Safaris was knowledgeable and helpful during the booking process and after getting to Africa it was clear that Ian had given us what we had asked for. Guest’s satisfaction is obviously of top priority. All of our guides were wonderful and added immeasurably to the quality of the experience. All flights, transfers, accommodations and activities were excellent. We would without question book a future trip with Ultimate Africa Safaris. P. Marlin, June 2011, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Ian thanks so much. The trip was fantastic. When we began our search we were impressed with both the responsiveness and knowledge of Ultimate Africa. Communications from the company were timely and complete. On the ground in Africa everything came off with no problem at all. Your arrangements were flawless. We could not have been more pleased with the entire experience. You folks were great and we will use you again for our next safari. V. Schmitt and K. Lipton, June 2011, Washington DC, USA
The most awesome experience ever and we travel a lot. Ultimate Africa Safaris was very knowledgeable and responsive to our needs at anytime! They gave great advice on where to go and lodging. S. Alexander, May / June 2011, Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA
We will recommend Ultimate Africa Safaris to friends and relatives. Lorna was always very helpful and would answer our questions quickly. Every single part of our honeymoon exceeded our expectations! The guides were so friendly and knowledgeable and the wildlife was spectacular. We felt like we were on a private safari for most of the trip and the camp staff went out of their way to make our trip romantic. With private candlelit dinners and champagne at our sundowners! Thank you so much for planning such an amazing experience for us. C. and L. King, May / June 2011, Seattle, Washington, USA
Our trip to Zimbabwe was awesome! Ruckomechi was a very enjoyable experience. Everyone was so nice and helpful. They even make adjustments so the 3 of us could stay in one cabin. The drives were so much fun and our guide was very knowledge. Little Makalolo was even better than Ruckomechi in that it was smaller and so we were able to get to know the staff much better. They also adjusted our accommodation to a family cabin so the 3 off us could stay together. Lewis, our guide, was amazing on what he knew about the wildlife. He even sang to us one evening at the camp fire which made it even more special. You are very knowledgeable of the Safari experience, always, available to answer questions and I received very fast response and every question I asked was explained in detail. Thanks for the great advice on where to visit and how to get the most of the safari. with be flexible in make arrangements to meet our request. I would recommend Ultimate Africa to anyone planning a Safari to Africa. A., S. and B. Call, May 2011, Boise, Idaho, USA
We saw many, many animals! All the details were exactly as you said they would be. We also were very pleased with the accommodations that were chosen for us. It was truly a SPECTACULAR TRIP! Thank you very much! We look forward to going again! D. And C. Gouwens, May 2011, Highland, Indiana, USA
We have returned home from a trip of a lifetime!!! It was 100% start to finish every step of the way and I am super happy we booked through your company. I can tell this was an advantage for us. I felt better informed about our travels than others on the trip who booked through other agencies. I have forwarded your information to multiple friends already and we are already talking about how to get back there again soon as possible. B. Hyder and A. Ross, May 2011, Riverside, California, USA
It was an absolutely fantastic experience which we hope to repeat soon. Ultimate Africa staff were very knowledgeable and helpful with our planning. The entire trip went flawlessly and the accommodations, staff and experiences we had were all fantastic. Thank you very much for everything. L. Birchall and Family, May 2011, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
I cannot really describe just how good you were to work with. You do everything right. Your own personal experience really helped us plan our very own ultimate trip to Africa. You gave us great, unbiased advice. I never felt like you were trying to get us to stay at any particular hotel or lodge because it might have been less work or more profitable for you. I always felt that your goal was to help us have the best possible trip. You were able to answer all of our questions and always got back to me via email and phone very quickly. I never had to chase you for an answer. Ultimate Africa is a role model for how a customer service business should be run. I hope my clients feel about me the way that I feel about you. I wouldn't hesitate for one second to recommend you to anyone going to Africa and look forward to going back to Africa because I know you're going to make it an easy trip to plan and it's going to be fantastic! Thank you again for all your amazing help! We all can't thank you enough. FYI - We talked with at least 3 other travel companies about this trip and you, by far, outshined all of them with your responsiveness, quality of the proposed trips, suggestions, knowledge of the countries and on and on!!! So, thank you so much again! R. and C. Boze
I wanted to write you and let you know what a fantastic time we had! We absolutely loved the Okavango Delta and our time in Mozambique. All of the accommodations were stellar - really over the top. The guides were so knowledgeable and generous and helped us experience the very best of the wildlife in Botswana. Both of you were great to work with. We are very happy we found you. To work with folks that have so much firsthand experience. You gave us a lot of pre-trip confidence that proved to be true. The level of firsthand experience is the biggest plus. It was a trip of a lifetime, thank you! Best wishes and gratitude to you. C. Stein and L. Mayfield, April / May 2011, Boulder, Colorado, USA
I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the trip. The arrangements you made for my wife and me and our friends were perfect. Everywhere we went we were met by representatives and never, throughout the entire trip, did I feel that we were left on our own. The flights were on time, the flight crews very professional and I always had an aisle seat (as you might recall; a requirement for traveling) and plenty of room. The accommodations were excellent and the game viewing was exceptional. There are sights that we saw on this trip that I have never seen in four previous trips to Africa. The Victoria Falls Hotel was excellent as always and it was much more occupied than the last time we were there: it’s nice to see that more tourists are returning to stay on the Zimbabwe side of the Falls. We saw more leopards on this one trip than we have in total on the last four safaris to Africa. I liked the fact that Botswana was very sparsely populated and we rarely saw another vehicle while on the drives. I will definitely recommend Ultimate Africa Safaris to anyone that I know that is interested in traveling to Africa. R. and C. Chambers, April 2011, Estero, Florida, USA
Thanks to your expertise we were able to see the wildebeest migration in Tanzania – a lifelong dream for us! Ndutu was a gem of a place. Your suggestion to couple it with Gibb’s Farm near Ngorongoro Crater worked perfectly. I wish we had more than a week to explore. You worked wonders with our limited budget and time! Thanks for all the wonderful memories! You exceeded our expectations! K. and F. Brussels, March 2011, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
You have made it sooo easy to put this trip together and it has been done in such a professional and thorough way that it actually puts me at ease in not worrying that this dream trip will unfold without a hitch. I cannot thank you enough Lorna !!!! T. and V. Irions, Elkhart, Indiana, USA
Hi! As I turned 72 this week, I am not sure if I ever sent this message! If I did then read it again. If I did not ,I am sorry is it so late in coming. We want to tell you how fantastic everything you did for us was. What can we say but thank you. Ian, you and Lorna, were a delight to work with, even though at times you probably thought we would never get anywhere with this trip. You worked so hard expertly planning everything we asked for. Your ability to get Holly on board so quickly was amazing. Our first week in Cape Town was fantastic. The safari you planned was unbelievable. The guides, drivers, all the hotels B&B’s and flights were perfect. The only way we can describe our experience with Ultimate Africa is in words such as - spectacular, legendary, wonderful, fabulous, easy to work with and very accommodating. You guys are terrific. We will surely recommend your company to anyone who wants to do a trip to Africa. In fact, I am giving your name to a friend who wants to go to South Africa. Good luck and I hope someday we can work together on another trip. Fondly, P. and M. Gotfrit, March 2011, New York, New York, USA
Very, very good. Top notch H. Wexler, March 2011, Birmingham, Minnesota, USA
We would like to thank Ultimate Africa for arranging our great three and a half week vacation in South Africa. It was the best trip we have ever had. Each of the safari lodges (Lion Sands), golf resorts (Sun City and Fancort) and hotels were as good as it gets. In particular, the Cape Grace Hotel and adjacent Cape Town waterfront area is maybe the best “city” location we have found yet. Every one of the short and long driver transfers that you set up were exactly on time and every driver was very nice and completely knowledgeable about the significant geographic aspects, the history and the people of each area. I will close by also noting that the hotel, transfer and air changes due to our decision to stay in Cape Town 2 more days went perfectly. Thanks for making that go so smoothly. R and M. Ellison, January 2011, Coto De Caza, California, USA
To summarize, it was AWESOME! Probably the best trip Stephanie and I have ever been on. Every location we visited was amazing. Once I get around to posting the pictures online, I'll send you a link. We took almost 4,000 pictures and I whittled them down to 350. Capetown - Visiting the Cape of Good Hope National Park, Boulders Beach (penguins), and the wine country was great. I tried some Kudu at one of the restaurants…quite good. We also became quite familiar with the local Capetown shopping areas to replenish some of the items we didn't have from our luggage getting delayed. Ann was so nice, basically being our mother on the last day in Capetown, she dropped us off at the mall so we could get a few more things before we left for the bush. Really above and beyond what she needed to do, but was more than happy to help us, which was much appreciated. Luckily, we were able to retrieve our bags during our layover in Johannesburg on the way to Livingstone. Meeting Peter upon arrival at The River Club and then having him take us by boat to our own private island in the middle of the Zambezi was unreal and pretty funny actually. It was like out of movie. Having a gourmet champagne lunch in the wilderness with hippo tracks next to the table is a unique experience to say the least. The River Club is an amazing place. It would have been nice to stay a couple days there but we just didn’t have the time. Since we were there only the one full day, we packed it in. We started the day off with the half-day river rafting…tons of fun! We then got a private tour of Victoria Falls by our main man Gilbert who drove us around most of the time in Livingstone. We then headed back and got a ride over to see the White Rhinos in the local park there. Then finished off the day with another sunset cruise on the river. Our hippo alarm clocks woke us up on time every morning. We came across a large group of giraffe on the road as we drove to the airport. You don't see that every day! The River Club is spectacular and the service and staff is top notch, so nice, and very personable. I really liked how flexible they were in catering to us as far as activities. We basically were able to fit in everything. Definitely not like many other places we have experienced where if you can't make a certain time for a tour, you're out of luck. I really liked that aspect a lot. Peter Jones is a great host. Botswana - Well, what can I say about safari in Botswana…incredible! Thanks for steering us this way Ian. Stephanie and I really liked the remoteness, the people, and scenery there. Every camp we stayed at was beyond words. We agreed we liked Tubu Tree and Duba Plains the best because we enjoyed the wide open plains of those areas versus the more closed-in, forested area around Linyanti. However I think we saw the most exotic animals at there! The guides, trackers, camp staff, and hosts were all great, accommodating, and knowledgeable. We had a couple characters as our guide and tracker in Duba Plains that fit our personality great. Stephanie, me, and the fellas had the whole truck to ourselves the two days, saw many animals and shared a lot of jokes together. In summary - Tubu Tree Camp: Elephant, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, kudu, impala, one female lion, one female leopard, baboon, vervet monkey, honey badger, hippo, leopard tortoise, eagle owl, fish eagle, many other birds. Highlights: One of the days there was a constant flow of what we all estimated was about 150 elephants parade across the open field right in the "backyard" off the camp porch. We had a herd of elephants come into camp and eat. There was a big one right outside our elevated tent all night, pretty funny…and noisy. Duba Plains: Elephant, giraffe, many female lions and cubs, male lion ("The Prime Minister"), kudu, buffalo, warthog, impala, red lechwe, bush buck, baboon, vervet monkey, hyena, honey badger, hippo, striped jackal, ostrich, Pel's Fishing Owl (apparently quite rare), fish eagle, many other birds. Highlights: We saw Silver Eye and the rest of the lionesses chase after some buffalo, didn't catch them though (to Stephanie's delight!). We did find a lioness that caught a baby warthog and brought it back to the cubs where we watched them munch on it for a little while (not to Stephanie's delight). Lowlight (but interesting): It appeared that one of the lion cubs (the female) might have been killed. One day it was there and the next she was missing from the group. The guides think maybe either one of the other lions or a crocodile killed it. King's Pool - Elephant, giraffe, female lion, male lion, 2 female leopards and 1 leopard cub, crocodile, impala, red lechwe, kudu, bush buck, baboon, vervet monkey, hyena, hippo, wild cat, bush baby, fish eagle, monitor lizard, many other birds. Highlights: The boat ride on the river between Botswana and Zambia with champagne or snacks on the riverbank. Having two separate leopard sightings. Lowlight (but interesting): Being a few feet from a male lion eating a dead hippo. Worst smell I've ever been around, wow. We saw babies of just about every animal. Stephanie couldn't get enough of them. Conclusion. For low season we were blown away! Traveling to these locations for your honeymoon is great. Every place we stayed, they did something special for Stephanie and I, from bottles of champagne to private dinners. I never drank so much champagne in my life! Obviously we have only done this once, but Stephanie and I both agree we are glad we went during the "wet" season because we really enjoyed the views of the vast plains and saw all the animals we wanted to see and more. We really enjoyed the warm weather and the occasional thunderstorm and lightning shows at night. Botswana is a great country on the right track with great people and from what we can tell, a great government for the people. Stephanie and I love the hippo "laugh." S. Yakobina and M. Thanks for the email and the excellent information. One of my friends sent me a link to your website and it’s the best out there of its kind; I appreciate that you tell things how they are and don’t pretend that every place is always wonderful. Unknown (but we still appreciate the kind comments!) |
