Delamere's Camp, Kenya

Kenya Safari Accommodations
A sampling of Kenya's lodges, tented camps and hotels that we consider "special" or unique and recommend to our clients.

Bataleur Camp, Masai Mara - Set in Kenya's Masai Mara, Bataleur Camp is stunning! The main area is comprised of a lounge and dining area furnished and decorated in a wonderful fashion - first class. There is a pool set beyond in a private area. The 9 tented rooms are fantastic - not spacious but decorated to the highest standards with bed, ceiling fan, balcony with soft cushioned leather chairs, shower, separate toilet and double sinks. A bathtub in each room would have been a great. The entire camp is fenced so wildlife does not wander through. The all inclusive rate includes drinks, day and night wildlife viewing  drives, and walks. Cultural excursions are at extra cost. NOTE: This camp competes with Governor's Il Moran Tented Camp as one of the top safari camps in the Mara. Il Moran's rooms are far more spacious, open and light as are Il Moran's bathrooms each with shower, separate tub, toilet, sink and bidet. Bataleur offers no baths in the rooms which are smaller but slightly more posh. Bataleur has a pool while Il Moran does not. Bataleur Camp is fenced. Il Moran is not fenced so wildlife may wander through! Ultimate Africa staff prefer Governor's Il Moran Tented Camp.

Borana Lodge, Mount Kenya Area - Brilliant! 6 luxurious, but rustic stone and thatch suites/cottages set haphazardly atop a ridge in untouched African bush - this gorgeous, privately owned, lodge commands dramatic views of Mount Kenya and the Laikipia Plateau. Surprising extravagance, elegance, privacy and homey comfort. Set on the 35,000 acre Borana Ranch each spacious room has its own private view, sitting area, fire place, and bathtub. As the lodge is set on private property activities include day and night wildlife viewing drives in open 4x4 vehicles, where you can view elephant and lion, buffalo, and various plains wildlife. Other activities include guided walks and horse riding. The lodge has a beautiful pool. If you dislike dogs do not stay at Borana.

Cottar's 1920's Camp, Masai Mara - For those who wish to step back in time Cottar's 1920's Camp, in a 22,000-acre exclusive concession in the Masai Mara, is just perfect. Six Spacious cream canvas tents, with generous verandahs, contain four poster beds with white damask canopies, lovely linen and sheer mosquito nets. The chest of drawers is an antique travelling trunk, hanging canvas shelves take folded clothes, kilims adorn the floor - everything is picturesque and in period. Only the bathroom, while in the style of the 1920's, offers more modern conveniences - a flush toilet, shower and running water. Cottar's 1920’s Camp differs from most, as each group, even if it is just one person, has its own dedicated, professional safari guide and vehicle. Activities are tailored to suit guests' requirements – day and night wildlife viewing drives can be enjoyed in 4WD vehicles or in an antique wooden car. The area is well suited to walking and guests can fish or swim at a nearby river. Those who want to take it easy can indulge in aromatherapy massages, outdoor canvas baths, or simply relax in the "mess tent" with its working gramophone and well-stocked library. Cottar's 1920's offers the discerning client privacy and an abundance of wildlife.

Crater Lake Camp, Lake Elementaita - Nestled on the shores of a jade green volcanic lake just one and a half hours from Nairobi, Crater Lake offers an evocative step back in time – to a bygone era of elegance and romance, in a wilderness untouched by the modern world. Here, you can sip chilled champagne and dine on the finest cuisine under the watchful gaze of genet cats and Colobus monkeys – before being transported to another world among the hippo, giraffe and leopards that call the private wildlife sanctuary home. Crater Lake has just 11 tents so your peace and privacy are guaranteed. The tents sit in secluded clearings in the lakeside forest with sweeping views over the flamingo-lined waters. Each is furnished with a giant four-poster bed, fine reproduction furniture, and an en suite bathroom with hot shower. The camp’s new ‘honeymoon tent’ boasts some of Africa’s most scenic bathing – in a sunken bath looking over the lake through a giant stained-glass window. History is everywhere at Crater Lake. The 10,000-acre sanctuary houses the famous hilltop grave where Happy Valley’s tragic heroine, Lady Diana Delamere, is buried with her last two husbands, Gilbert Colvile and Thomas Delamere. For the truly intrepid, there are the mysterious ‘Caves of God’ in the golden wheatfields of Ndabibi – reputed to be one of the inspirations for Rider Haggard’s Allan Quartermain. The camp will prepare special romantic excursions – sundowners on the panoramic outcrop of Leopard Rock or a candlelit dinner on the lakeside jetty – while safari vehicles can take guests to the dramatic gorge of Hell’s Gate or the shimmering expanse of Lake Nakuru – home to more than half the world’s lesser flamingos. But for all its spectacular surroundings, visitors to Crater Lake often prefer to sit on their verandahs overlooking what must be one of the most beautiful small lakes in creation. The camp has been described as "Kenya’s most romantic tented camp". Activities include professionally guided walks and day and night wildlife viewing drives.

Elsa's Kopje, Meru - Stunning! Elsa’s Kopje is named after the orphaned lioness reared by George and Joy Adamson and returned to the wild in Meru National Park. Perched upon a rocky outcrop, this private hideaway is the site of George’s first camp and enjoys a splendid view over the striped landscape of lush green rivers running through dry brown valleys. The lodge consists of eight open plan stone and thatch cottages. Filled with traditional African-made furniture and bright fabrics, each cottage has its own private bathroom and two have huge stone baths which blend perfectly with the rocky landscape around them. Meru is a dry environment with interesting game and bird life sustained by the numerous streams running off the nearby mountains. Guests may enjoy day and night wildlife viewing drives in open 4WD vehicles and guided nature walks, some with the added surprise of a bush breakfast or dinner. Guests can fish or raft on the Tana River or simply relax, enjoying the magnificent view from the pool area.

Giraffe Manor, Nairobi - An exclusive and unique homestay in a 1932 built manor house with extensive gardens. Rare Rothschild giraffe amble on the 160 acre property. The well maintained home can accommodate up to 12 guests. Each of the rooms are unique and different. Some are linked to other rooms and many have separate bathrooms outside of the rooms. It is amazing to wake up to a giraffe peering into the second story rooms as they eat vines of the house's facade. In our opinion - stay here for the giraffes, not for the accommodations.

Governor's Il Moran, Masai Mara - Perfection! Set in the Masai Mara, Governor's Il Moran Tented Camp is comprised of ten tents, all facing the Mara River. The ten tents consist of a large wooden framed bed, carpets, furnishings, and a very large bathroom with separate shower, bath, bidet, toilet, and sink. The main area consists of a tented lounge with comfortable chairs and pillows and a dining tent. The all inclusive rate includes drinks, all activities (walks, day time drives, and cultural excursions) excepting hot air balloon safaris (these launch from Little Governors Camp). Dinners are served privately at your tent, by the outdoor fire or communally in the dining area - you decide each evening which you would prefer. There is no fencing so wildlife is free to wander through at any time. There is no pool. Ultimate Africa staff believe Governor's Il Moran offers the best accommodations in the Masai Mara.

Indian Ocean Lodge, Malindi (beach) - Set on a 4 acre property overlooking the Indian Ocean, this incredible, privately owned lodge, caters to 16 guests in 8 large rooms. Each nicely furnished room has a bathroom with toilet, sink and shower, and a balcony. There is no air conditioning (there are ceiling fans  to make up for this. Fortunately during most of the year there is a steady breeze. March can be oppressively hot). Besides the beds being a bit hard everything else is close to perfection, including the food - Ultimate Africa staff enjoyed a fresh dorado (wahoo) curry with rice for dinner on our last visit. The all inclusive rate includes drinks (excepting bottles of wine), snorkeling, car excursions within 30 kilometers to town or the nearby ruins. The pool is surrounded by fantastic gardens and is a lovely spot to spend an afternoon. At night guests fall asleep to the sound of the ocean waves crashing on to the coral. If you dislike dogs do not stay here.

Kiwayu, Lamu (beach) - Kiwayu Safari Village combines great natural beauty with exotic accommodations, marvelous food, and perfect peace and privacy. Nestled under coconut palms on the white sands of a secluded bay the location was originally a hunter's camp and elephant used to swim across to Kiwayu Island. In the central lounge, bar, dining areas thatched roofs shade enormous floor cushions piled in abandon for guests to flop on. Tables are large logs of gray weathered driftwood. 22 spacious and luxurious grass and palm leave thatched cottages are spaced along the beach. Rooms are all en suite with larger than king sized beds, and have no doors or windows - just wide open spaces with trees growing up through the floors. Privacy is assured and the ocean is a quick dash away! Activities include windsurfing, beach walks, goggling, and creek fishing. Many people stay a week or longer - what a dream!

Lewa Downs Wilderness Trails, Mount Kenya Area - Located in the foothills of Mount Kenya, Lewa Downs offers a magical combination of thoughtful hospitality, unforgettable scenery, and abundant wildlife. If you dislike dogs do not stay at Wilderness Trails.

This is a wilderness area of pristine beauty and remoteness made famous by conservationist and author Anna Mertz. The camp operates on a non profit basis with much of the monies collected going to the conservancy. Guests are accommodated in spacious permanent tented rooms with en-suite facilities. What makes this place special is the exclusivity, the wonderful views including Mount Kenya in the distance, and the wildlife which includes over 60 black and white rhino, roughly 15 lion, leopard, the occasion pack of wild dogs wandering through, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, Grant's gazelle, wildebeest, ostrich, besia oryx, eland, hyena, sitatunga in the swamps, Mount Kenya hartebeest, warthog, Defassa waterbuck, and over 25% of the world's population of Grevy's zebra (roughly 600). Guests are accommodated in 17 spacious walk in tents with en suite facilities. Friendly yet private with abundant wildlife often encountered wandering through camp. Balloon safaris launch from the camp each morning. Activities include game drives in the Masai Mara. There is no pool.

Loisaba, Loisaba Wilderness - Loisaba is set within a 150 square kilometer private wildlife conservancy, situated on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau, seventy kilometers north of Mount Kenya. The grassy plains of the northern plateau break into valleys, cliffs and escarpments that frame astounding views of snow-capped Mount Kenya in the south. Originally the African home of an Italian count, the Loisaba Wilderness is a haven for over 250 bird and 50 animal species. Elephant, Grevy’s zebra and greater kudu abound and the area is rapidly gaining a reputation for big cat sightings. Even wild dogs, once thought to be extinct here, are returning and being sighted. The main lodge, perched high on the plateau looking south towards Mt. Kenya, is constructed from stone, cedar and thatch. Each of the seven rooms has large, wooden French windows that open onto a private deck cantilevered off the escarpment. This remote and charismatic hideaway has a swimming pool, tennis court and croquet lawn and all the furniture has been hand made from acacia trees knocked down by elephants. Spending a night under the stars on one of the unique Loisaba 'Star Beds' is an experience not to be missed. These raised, wooden platforms are half covered with traditional palm thatch and have a flush toilet, shower and large double bed that can be wheeled outside. Here, from the comfort of your thick duvet, your ceiling will become infinity. It is most fun to reach the Star Beds on foot or horseback and, once there, you are well looked after by a colorful team of Samburu warriors. Activities at Loisaba include Star Bed based walking and riding safaris, horseback riding, camel riding, day and night wildlife viewing drives in open 4x4 vehicles, fishing, tennis, and  swimming. Great place!

Loldia House, Lake Naivasha - Loldia Ranch was established by a family who trekked by ox-wagon from South Africa a century ago. Today their descendants still own the land. Loldia House nestles under ancient Acacia trees. In the main house there’s a choice of four en-suite double rooms, with original furniture. And three more rooms in the specially-built Loldia cottage which has it’s own sitting-room, fire and panoramic views. Britain’s Country Life Magazine described Loldia’s manager as "probably the best butler in the world". Activities at Loldia House are tailor-made for each guest. On Loldia Farm itself there’s 6,500 acres to explore on foot or horseback. See cattle graze among a flock of farmed ostriches and ride through herds of wild antelope. Loldia House looks across Lake Naivasha where you can take boat trips to the hippo pools, birdwatch, or enjoy fishing. Don’t miss out on a 4x4 day tour to Lake Nakuru National Park which is home to black rhino, lion, leopard and lots of smaller game. For something a bit different you may enjoy a picnic lunch by the lake. Nakuru is also famous for it’s flamingos. Enormous flocks congregate here turning the entire lakeshore pink. Lakes Elementeita and Bogoria are also worth a day trip. Flamingos are found at both, and Bogoria has the rare and beautiful greater kudu and spectacular hot geysers. Nearby is Hell’s Gate National Park, named for it’s spectacular canyons and hot springs, and the energetic can climb Longonot volcano.

Mara River Camp, Masai Mara - Nestled at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment on the northwest boundary of the Masai Mara National Reserve, is one of Kenya’s smallest and most charming tented lodges. Situated on a beautiful forested bend of the Mara River, Mara River Camp is homely and intimate with only 16 en-suite twin tents. The Mara supports the largest diversity of species in Africa and, because of its incredible array of predators and their prey, is the one of the best places to witness the tense and dramatic interactions between these hunters and the hunted. Only a few kilometers downstream the annual migration of the wildebeest and attendant zebra and antelope may be in full flow, as they run the gauntlet of the dangers of the Mara River. Mara River Camp is favored by naturalists, wildlife researchers, film crews, photographers and conservationists. Activities include unlimited game drives, optional nature walks and cultural immersion with local Maasai and optional hot air ballooning (at extra cost).

Mount Kenya Safari Club, Mount Kenya - This beautiful hotel, made famous by William Holden, exudes charm! From the beautiful gardens to the expansive rolling lawns it is the perfect place to relax. All of the rooms are very nice excepting the standard rooms in the main building which are very dated, yet clean. The dining area is gorgeous and the bar and sitting areas are full of character - very inviting. A lovely blue pool can be seen from the bar. The property includes a 9 hole golf course, a lake stocked with trout where guests can try their hand at fishing and a labyrinth. Visits to the adjoining nature reserve are at extra cost as are walks, golf, drinks and use of the business center. The hotels rate is inclusive of all meals. It must be noted that the River Facing rooms (the nicest) are over a kilometer from the main hotel down a steep and winding road. The William Holden Cottages (great for parties of 4) are closer, but still quite far from the main area. These rooms have much more character as they are older.

Nairobi Serena Hotel, Nairobi - A luxurious and beautiful garden hotel that is a 10 minute walk from the city center. It is a member of "the leading hotels of the world". The hotel has two restaurants, a bar area and outdoor pool. This hotel is frequented by business travelers. Ultimate Africa staff prefer Nairobi's Norfolk Hotel, which has a more relaxed atmosphere.

Ngong House, Nairobi - Ngong House is a private home on a 10 acre estate with stunning views of Ngong Hills. The home accommodates 8 guests in 4 separate "tree houses" (elevated cottages, each uniquely designed with ensuite bathroom). The main building includes the dining area, lounge and snooker table. Outside there is a pool and additional dining area. During the day you may enjoy a pleasant walk through the surrounding countryside. The Giraffe Center is only a 10 minute stroll away and a 4 wheel drive Land Rover is on standby to travel further afield.

Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi - A hotel with an international reputation for hospitality and excellence since 1904. It is a member of "the leading hotels of the world" and has three restaurants. A relaxing location to overnight upon arriving in Kenya. On a negative note - guests can often be heard between rooms.

Ol Donyo Waus, Chyulu Hills - Ol Donyo Waus has been built in the Chyulu Hills, a range of volcanoes running between Amboseli and Tsavo National Park. Accommodation is provided in four cottages, each with a veranda, fireplace and en suite bathrooms. Activities at Ol Donyo Waus include horse riding, both day and night game drives and escorted walking safaris. Owing to the great diversity of habitat within the quarter of a million acre Maasai group ranch, a wide variety of wildlife is found here, although in limited numbers. Antelope such as oryx and gerenuk associated with drier northern areas of Kenya, mix with zebra, eland and wildebeest. In the hills which consist of rolling wooded grassland, capped by mist forest, 34 species of large mammals have been recorded of which 32 species are resident all year round. Perhaps the greatest charm however lies in the vast and mainly uninhabited panoramas, dominated by the snow capped peak of Kilimanjaro.

Peponi's, Lamu - Travel back in time to Lamu. This small, coastal town offers tantalizing glimpses of life as it was five hundred years ago. A fascinating mixture of Arabic, Indian and African cultures, Lamu is one the original trading outposts. Sited on one of seven islands in an archipelago, this ancient trading town is one of the last remnants of a trading empire that encompassed the entire East African Coast. This is old town of tall houses, narrow streets, intricately carved doorways, hidden courtyards and deserted, white-sand beaches is the home of Peponi Hotel. This family-run, small hotel is rated as one of the best hotels in the world. Set upon a headland of Lamu Island, Peponi offers a view of two worlds. On one hand, there are the historical scenes of Lamu Old Town, the calling to prayer of the mosques, black buibui-clad hennaed ladies and tiny, one roomed, local shops. On the other hand, there is a magical tropical beach, considered crowded with ten people and rimmed by the Indian Ocean's endlessly moving blue waters. Peponi Hotel was never planned. It simply happened. Starting as the Korschen family house, over the past 30 years Peponi has grown into a 24-bedroom hotel offering attentive service, delicious meals and endless relaxation. Peponi is personal; you arrive as a guest, and leave as a friend, anticipating your return before your departure! Peponi's charm lies in its magical ambiance. Every part of it, the architecture, the smiling staff, the sea breeze, the fresh food, the views and even the smells, create a spell that entrances. Discover the Lamu Old Town on foot or by donkey (cars are not allowed on the island). Watch as halwa, a traditional, local sweet, is made in large copper cauldrons, or barter for hand carved wooden furniture. Explore the coconut matting homes of the fishermen and watch the ancient art of ocean-going dhow building. Carpenters and herbalists, jewelers and coffee houses...there are an infinite variety of experiences. Wander through the development of Swahili culture in the Lamu museum, itself a piece of history as the original Omani fortress of Lamu. Ceremonial horns, jewelry, handicrafts and the old seagoing vessels of the traders that created Lamu are all here to be investigated. Venture out to the ocean to deep-sea fish, dive or snorkel, or relax on a full moon sailing dhow boat-cruise through the archipelago. Explore the endless white sand beaches during the day and savor delicious seafood dinners in the evening.

Rusinga Island Camp, Lake Victoria - Rusinga Island is located in the north eastern corner of Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater lake and the source of the river Nile. Rusinga Island Camp is a small, family run, lodge which can accommodate a maximum of 10 people in thatched cottages, each with a superb view of the lake. The rooms each have their own bathrooms and and are attractively decorated with local ornamental baskets and colorful fabrics. For larger groups there is additional accommodation for a further 6 guests in luxury tents. Excursions by boat along the shores of the Island show the Luo people ( the third largest tribe in Kenya) in their colorful and beautifully painted boats fishing along the shores and laying their night’s catch out to dry in the sun. It is possible to troll for Nile perch along the shore and to cast for tilapia either from the boat or the shore. Both fish make delicious eating. The Camp currently holds the ‘all tackle’ record, at 191 lb, for the heaviest Nile perch, as well as several other ‘line class’ records. For sailing, there are two modern wind-surfers and a traditional dhow. A short walk from the lodge brings you to the site where Mary Leakey discovered Proconsul heseloni in 1948, one of mans earliest ancestors. Wildlife viewing drives to Ruma to see one of the last surviving group of Roan antelope in Kenya can arranged. Other wildlife includes the Jackson hartebeest and Rothschild giraffe, oribi, bohor reedbuck, impala, topi, waterbuck and buffalo. Leopard are frequently sighted. The park is noted also for many unusual species of birds that only occur in Western Kenya. The word is that Rusinga is fished out but it is still worth visiting for the culture, Ruma Park, and the hospitality.

Samburu Intrepids, Samburu - Samburu Intrepids tented camp is set in the midst of the rugged and savagely beautiful semi arid desert of northern Kenya. Located in the Samburu National Reserve on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, guests are accommodated in 25 tastefully furnished, spacious tents which are elevated on individual decks under the shade of huge acacia trees. Rooms have ensuite facilities including hot and cold running water and flush toilets. Rooms also have electricity. The lodge is subtly constructed to enhance its closeness with nature. The occasional visits from the elephants and crocodiles below the decks make nights here most memorable! Activities include wildlife viewing drives, short walks, and camel back excursions.

Sangare Tented Camp, Aberdare Mountains - Sangare is quite simply one of the most beautiful private farms in Kenya, a 6,500 acre property at an altitude of 6,000 feet in the foothills of the Aberdare Mountains with spectacular views across the valley to Mount Kenya. Guests are accommodated in six en-suite permanent tented rooms. The camp overlooks a small lake (complete with row boat) encircled by tall yellow fever acacia trees where elephant and buffalo are regular visitors. Sangare Ranch is home to a wide variety of wildlife including some 70 Elephant around which the Elephant Corridor Project is centered. Leopard, hyena, colobus and Sykes monkeys, and all the common plains game species, such as zebra, gazelle, giraffe, eland, buffalo are present in good number. You can be escorted by the ranch’s resident guides to view the animals at an exciting close range on foot or on horseback - by day or by night. The "nightwalks" are a unique experience only available at Sangare where you search for bats, bushbabies, hyrax, mongooses, insects, and reptiles. By day you may follow a nature trail through the Ranch’s riverine forests in search of black and white Colobus Monkeys and may glimpse the majestic Crowned eagle. While the nearby Solio Game Ranch and Rhino Sanctuary is close at hand for an evening game drive in search of black and white rhino.

Serena Beach Hotel, Mombasa (beach) - Whitewashed arches, lush garden courts, and a spectacular arrangement of pools make the Serena Beach Hotel one of "The Leading Hotels of the World". Ultimate Africa staff feel that the Serena Beach Hotel is even more impressive than the Zanzibar Serena. There are several indoor and outdoor eating areas, bars, a sports area with tennis, squash and a complimentary gym, swimming pool, lush gardens, and long sandy beach (not a tropical paradise beach but none the less generally free of seaweed and nice). The rooms here are divided into the old wing and the new wing. The new wing's bathrooms are a bit nicer however the rooms sit further back from the beach. The old wing's rooms are quite nice and the bathrooms modern and clean with sink, toilet and full bath with shower. Guests may enjoy windsurfing, sailing and snorkeling. Other extra activities include scuba diving, deep sea fishing, and dhow cruises. Excellent!

Shompole, Great Rift valley - Shompole lies on the edge of the Great Rift Valley overlooking sun-baked plains and riverine forest, great creased volcanic mountains and lush green wetlands. It is the product of a partnership with the Maasai people of the area. Constructed to emphasize the beauty of natural materials combined with flowing water and smooth white walls, the camp is truly an unusual and exquisite place. The six tented en suite rooms are very spacious, each a shady oasis in this green desert environment. With privacy, comfort and relaxation in mind, each room consists of a cool-pool and informal sitting areas, a bathroom with a view and a specially-designed tent which includes vast windows and a high canopied roof. The Conservancy area is home to many species of animals and birdlife and includes one of the most ecologically diverse areas in Africa with rainforest, acacia woodland, grass plains, riverine forest, salt plains and soda lakes. There is an abundance of plains wildlife and nocturnal animals frequently seen include aardwolf, civet, serval, leopard and striped hyena. Elephant, lion and cheetah are found in the swamp and grassy plains, while the birdlife is varied and plentiful. All funds collected from Conservancy fees contribute to the maintenance and patrolling of the area and to projects that benefit the community as a whole; such as the establishment of schools, clinics and other self-sustaining businesses. The colorful Maasai are fully involved in the project, employed in the lodge and included in any decision-making involving the business. They welcome visitors to both the camp and their villages and are an important focal point of a stay at Shompole. In addition, the area is also home to the Tanzanian Maasai whose white beads and very traditional way of life, distinguish them from the Maasai of Kenya. The variety of landscape available at Shompole allows for a great range of activities from early morning and evening walks, river trips, night drives, sundowner visits to Lake Natron to see the flamingos, picnics and nights spent out in romantic fly-camps. The pre-historic site of Olorgesaille offers an interesting day out. The experience and skills of Maasai guides and trackers play an important part in the experience. Activities are unscheduled and organized according to the preferences of the guests.

Sweetwater's Tented Camp, Mount Kenya - Sweetwater's Tented Camp is set within the Sweetwater's Reserve. This tented camp has a very charming "east Africa safari" feel.
